I studied the MA Fine Art (Drawing pathway) at Camberwell college of Art, London, September 2022 – November 2023. This MA took a research-lead arts practice approach. Before starting my practice already was concerned with social and political issues and for some time I have been trying to find my way to use visual art to critique dominant discourses that remove freedom and justify exploitative, abuse and violent treatment to ‘the other’. I decided to focus initially on our beliefs about our relationship to ‘other nature’ but redirected this fairly soon to a critique of our treatment and beliefs about Other Animals, particularly (but not exclusively) animals that are ‘farmed’ by the Animal Agricultural Industry. I wanted to question the violent iconography of Other Animals in a way that avoids using violent imagery, because I think that, when this violence is so normalised, making more violent images does not challenge it.
My interest in this focus stems from the fact that I come from generations of animal farmers, and grew up on a mixed dairy and sheep farm in North Yorkshire. I became vegan 7 years ago.
