Works shown here are in some cases a response to the question that I raise on the home page – particularly the gallery ‘experiments in imagining otherwise’, but in the majority of cases – they are not. Many of the drawings are works made before I started on The Museum of Human Violence. Most series, e.g ‘The Machine Stops’, ‘Cement and Acid Rain’, ‘Make Do and Mend’ and even ‘The Red Shoes’, I would place under the category of ‘Drawing As Critique’, but other series I would not, e.g Sketches in the North Yorkshire Dales. Even in the latter series, however, the cave drawings more toward an exploration of ‘Plato’s Cave’ : the idea that what humans believe to be the truth is an illusion, and that when we are shown ‘the truth’ we cannot recogise it.
