The Machine Stops

This short short by E. M. Forster, written in 1909 seems to predict the world we are getting closer to in 2023: humans live in isolation and communicate only through a ‘tablet’. They never meet except virtually, until one day Kuno contacts Vashti to ask her to visit him. He tells her that life on the surface of earth is possible, and she thinks him mad. Slowly the machine that is worshipped by all humans begins to grind to a halt.
